If you’re needing new foul weather gear, you may be a bit worried about the price tags and overwhelmed with the choices. However, investing in solid gear that fits well and meets your needs, can be invaluable on a cold, dark, cruising passage. Finding the right gear that works for you is key.

On Deck: André Baby
The 2022 Iceboats US Nationals are currently being held in place of the 2022 North American Championship, which was cancelled because of the pandemic. Six Canadians are competing. “On Deck” conversation with an iceboat racer who was a medalist in sailing at the 1963 Pan American Games: André Baby. What do you remember the most from the 1963 Pan American Games? Sailing was held on Lake Guarapiranga, near Sao Paulo, in Brazil. Eight Bells - Sid Dakin and James Barkman
Last week the shark fleet said goodbye to two of its finest, Sid Dakin and James Barkman. Sid Dakin – One of the first and most ardent supporters of the Shark, his early ventures in the shark brought recognition to the class and a great respect for the sailors that sailed them. Sid won six World Championship, the first five ever held from 1966-1970 followed by a remarkable sixth world title in 1999, 29 years after his previous win.

Dragons Firing Up for '22
It’s been a quiet couple of years for Dragon sailing in North America. In 2020, most events, including Club Racing, were cancelled until late in the summer. But by 2021, a full set of local events were held. Because the US-Canada border was closed to non-essential travel, many big events were cancelled or had reduced attendance. With the border now open in both directions (with some restrictions), we expect 2022 to be better.

Rules for Kids in Sint Maarten
My husband, Nick, and I planned our trip to Sint Maarten back in July hoping that everyone would be good and get vaccinated so we could get this pandemic over with. In September, we nearly pulled the plug, but as time went on, cases on the Caribbean island dropped to about three a week. We packed our snorkels and bathing suits and headed off in late November, just before Omicron decided to invade Canada.

Speed & Smarts: How To Tackle a Speed Problem - Part 1
In sailboat racing, speed is almost everything. It’s important to be smart at tactics and strategy, of course, but if you’re not pretty fast you will never be consistently at the top of your fleet. Therefore, good speed is worth a large investment of time and effort. Every racing sailor has issues with speed from time to time, but these won’t normally turn into big problems unless you don’t make any concerted effort to fix them.
