Canadian Results at NYYC Invitational
Well, that’s a wrap. The 2023 NYYC Invitational ended this weekend one day early because of Hurricane Lee. It was another fantastic event despite the looming hurricane which had a significant effect on the race officials and the competitors. The NYYC officials proved once again that they are one of the most experienced and prepared race management teams in the world. They stayed on top of the weather, kept us all informed of the potential contingency plans, and navigated the event smoothly and successfully.

Sail Power
Mastering Apparent Wind
Expert and novice sailors alike use apparent wind. Many sailors believe apparent wind is unworthy of deep consideration and take it for granted because they feel they’ve already grasped the concept. Although its fundamentally simple, apparent wind is dynamically complex in practice. Apparent wind is the most important factor affecting a sailboat in motion. Apparent wind is elusive, it changes constantly as we sail; it’s the throttle by which we sail. Mastering the triggers that control apparent wind will unlock your sailing potential more than any other thing you can pay attention to.

The Rules Guy
Tacking
In a recent protest, it became clear to me that there is confusion about the rules related to tacking. Tacking is not defined in the rule book, but there are a few rules that either discuss tacking, or relate to what we commonly call “tacking”. The first and most obvious rule is rule 13. The title of the rule is “WHILE TACKING”, though the word appears nowhere in the rule. The rule covers what we are often taught “don’t tack too close”. In the diagram we see Red, on port tack approaching Green on starboard. Red decides to tack in front of Green.

SailGP: Canada Faces Challenges, NZ Explodes in Saint-Tropez
The European portion of SailGP Season 4 got underway this weekend in Saint-Tropez, France. Having hit record breaking speeds last year on the Côte d’Azur, Phil Robertson and the Canadians were looking forward to this weekend of racing, but things did not turn out as hoped. A penalty in the pre-start of race one was a precursor of what was to come, and it proved difficult for the team to recover. A collision with Spain early on in race one set the team back and translated into eight penalty points for the event and an additional four penalty points for the season.

Supporting Sailing
Reaching for Excellence
With less than one year to the next Olympic Games, our Canadian Sailors are in pursuit to qualify the nation for space on the starting lines of the Paris 2024 Sailing Events. At this time, Canada is already celebrating Sarah Douglas’ exemplary efforts at the Sailing World Championships where she qualified a spot for Canada in the ILCA 6 class at the Paris Olympics! So much remains for our sailors to do at events and with their training. We are all watching, and we all cheer them on, so now let's help fill the sails of these great athletes! How? There are so many ways, one of which is with your very own Aeroplan points!
