Sailing Shorts
February 14 2024
Leave a Sailing Legacy. Until recently the 1st Boundary Bay Sea Scouts Group in Tsawwassen ran a very successful sailing program for over 20 years for scouts living in Tsawwassen. The training enabled some scouts to achieve their certification as qualified Day Skippers from the Canadian Yachting Association. Rather than restarting that program exclusively for Tsawwassen Scouts, we intend to expand the program to include Scout groups...

Review and Test – Sailing Smarts Part 4: Ahead or Behind?
With the mild weather around, it’s hard not to get cranked up about the season ahead. Dave Dellenbaugh’s review tests are a brilliant way to get your brain in gear. Last issue we took a look at when boats converge and what to do about it. This time, the critical question – are you ahead of them? Questions: Question 20: The direction of your wind is 240°. You are racing upwind and you take a compass bearing of 335° on a nearby boat. Are you ahead of or behind them? A) You’re ahead. B) You’re behind. C) Both boats are even.

The Rules Guy
After You Cross the Finishing Line II
In the last article I discussed a few situations that can happen after you cross the finishing line. I focused on the first two exceptions in the definition of finish. This article will focus on the third exception (c) “continues to sail the course.” In the diagram, the course is a twice around windward-leeward course. A common situation, the same mark is used as the start mark, the leeward mark and the finishing mark. The race committee either uses a different boat for the start and finish or moves in between the start and finish. At position 5, Purple crosses the finishing line from the course side.

MarsKeel and Catalina’s New High Lift Aspect Shoal Draft Bulb Keel
The Catalina 425 is an all-new design that replaces the Catalina 42. Embracing a contemporary aesthetic, it is designed to endure in function and aesthetics in the Catalina tradition. Burlington, ON- based MarsKeel’s in-house Keel Technologist, Bill Souter, collaborated with Catalina Yachts to design and produce the first few of these keels for the new 425. The new keel design was to be an option to the existing wing keel. This new design maintained the same draft without the wings while improving the VCG and righting moment. The new modern bulb design also maintains excellent pointing ability and slightly increases boat speed.
