The Sound of Salad - Clang
There’s a particularly grating sound the calendar makes when it flips to September. There’s suddenly a cluster of red leaves and a hint of snap in what was a caressing summer breeze. It’s not quite time to haul out but it’s not the same either.
You and I have both heard that boaters never grow up and this is pretty apparent when we see the kids head back to school. Our visceral reaction remains the same as when we were 10; no more baseball in the park and hanging out with friends. It’s time for sitting straight, being on time and no talking in class.
I don’t want to take this metaphor too far, but it’s fair. Quit cruising plans and docking technique and get down to work on that book report. No more leisurely afternoons on the dock with a beverage and a bag of cheesies; eat your lunch in 40 minutes and get back to your desk before math class.

Five Maintenance Items You Shouldn’t Ignore
A well-maintained boat is a happy boat. Boats have lots of parts, and they’re constantly exposed to the elements, doused with water, or fried by the sun. Miss the maintenance on a moving part and there’s a good chance that, sooner or later, it will cease moving altogether. Here are five commonly ignored items that should be on your list of maintenance chores.

The Ice Cream Dock
Michael Alton built this floating ice-cream shack in his New Brunswick driveway last winter out of mostly recycled materials. He then craned it into the water for the big opening. Everything on board the shack is run by solar and battery power. “I wanted to make it look like, you know, like a baseball … snack shack when you were a kid, you know, where you’d go to get a freezie or ice cream at the game,” said Alton.

Trimming – it’s just plane sense. Part 2: Trim Tabs
Last time, we looked at outboard and stern drive tweaking to get the boat planing. Further to that we consider trim tabs as an additional means. The larger the boat, the more difficult it becomes to raise/lower the outboard or sterndrive on its own. Trim tabs and similar-result attitude mitigation systems are added to aid in the deflection of water and to allow larger boats to reach the ‘planing’ position faster.

Those who have boated after Labour Day can attest to just what a beautiful experience it can be. The colours are spectacular in their shimmering reflections. News of NTG (North Technology Group) buying Quantum Sails and Doyle Sails has lots of sailors talking about sail lofts lately. R2K Report
The race started at 1015 on Saturday morning with a forecast of light winds, occasional storms and a slow run. What happened was the wind built in from the South and from reports from various competitors, held steady at 15-20 knots – all from the south. Although there was rain ashore, most crews were dry until they got to Kingston. Morning rain there, then it dried out for the balance of Sunday.
