Canadians in the Caribbeans
My Heineken 2024 Report
The Serious Racing, Serious Fun regatta lives up to its advertised promotion. After missing this regatta for a few years, the chance to go back came up and I jumped on it. (Ed Note: Larry and Warthog won their Division!) The Boat – Warthog. A program I have been keen to sail with made some room for me and it was all I hoped it to be. Jim Vos owns the boat; I know him from doing J109 racing on Long Island Sound. Jim decided to transition from racing his large catamaran and looking for something in a manageable monohull that would provide a good turn of speed and be competitive.

Canadians Best Ever at DN NA’s
Earlier this month, Canadian DN Sailors journeyed to Wisconsin and made a very strong showing at the DN North Americans finishing four boats in the top ten. Over the past 4-5 years a keen group of sailors from Montreal and Kingston have been quietly honing their skills at the oldest form of competitive sailing – Iceboat racing. The Canadian team made up of four sailors from Montreal and three from Kingston, set out for the North American Championships before actually knowing where the regatta would be held. This is not uncommon in iceboat racing because above all else we need sailable conditions.

Spearheaded by local experts Stuart and Joy Dahlgren, and supported by their expert team of sailmakers, they seamlessly integrate into North Sails Canadian operations. Located on picturesque Vancouver Island, the new North loft, in the purpose built 5,700 square foot facility that until recently operated as a UK Sailmakers loft sits on the shores of Tsehum Harbour adjacent to Van Isle Marina. “We look forward to continuing to foster the valuable relationships we’ve built within the sailing community."

Kingston Sail Loft Continues
As of February 1, Kingston Sail Loft is up and running with repairs and new sails for 2024. Stephen Yates, Sue Fraser and Ali Meller at Kingston Sail Loft are busy with servicing, repairs and selling new sails. Bay Sails will be supporting KSL with new sail design and production. KSL principal, John Clark, who passed not long ago, was excited for them to continue running the loft, and even gave them sewing lessons on the venerable Adler 166, with extensive instructions to keep it oiled. Every sailmaker knows nothing runs like a well-oiled sewing machine, unless it doesn’t get oiled.

Georgian Bay Regatta July 31 to August 4, 2024
The Georgian Bay Regatta is the ultimate test of racing skill and strategy with light air, heavy air and everything in between. What brings it all together is competition among some of the world’s great scenery. History/Background: In 1985, the Georgian Bay Regatta (GBR) began as an ambitious sailing regatta featuring two main events that lasted a week each. Initially, the regatta kicked off in Thornbury. One of the events was a challenging, non-stop race around Georgian Bay, including a leg into Parry Sound. The second event consisted of daily competitions...

Triradial vs Crosscut Mainsails – Part 2
In most one design classes like Stars or Etchells, where intense effort is made by sail designers to make the fastest sails, a very high proportion of the sail shape is imparted with tapering of the edges of the assembled panels. Sailmakers call this broadseaming, but it should be more accurately described as seam curves. This converting of flat pieces of cloth into a smoothly curved three-dimensional surface requires that the edges of each panel is super accurately cut and assembled. This sounds difficult to do with scissors, and it is, since the amounts of curve are measured in fractions of millimetres in some cases.
