Halifax SailGP – Who Knew?
Who knew that Canada would be the world’s most popular sailing nation? That’s the way it has turned out if the demand for SailGP spots is an indicator. Tickets for the Rockwool Canada SailGP went on sale on March 27th and by the 28th, we were already getting signals it would be a sellout. On the web, you could immediately see pleas for tickets: “Hello. If anyone has extra waterfront reserve tickets for June 2 please let me know. Looking for 5 tickets.” “I was just about to order tickets and the waterfront reserve says unavailable but not sold out. Do you know if all 1200 tickets are sold out?” Anyone know the answer?

Road to Paris 2024
Additional Canadians to Qualify to be Nominated for Paris 2024 Olympics at the 2024 Princess Sofia Regatta
The Road to Paris 2024 continues for Canadian sailors at the 2024 Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta, now underway in Palma, Spain, as additional athletes will qualify to be nominated for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in predetermined events at that competition. As of today, Canada has qualified as a country in four events (49er, 49erFX, ILCA 6 and Women’s Kiteboarding) while only one Canadian team/athlete has officially qualified to be nominated for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Antonia and Georgia Lewin-LaFrance from Nova Scotia in 49erFX.

The Many Faces of Sailing at Mimico Cruising Club
At Mimico Cruising Club (MCC), cruising is a tradition and racing is a passion. In the January 2024 issue we profiled MCC’s PHRF program where competition on the race course gives way to camaraderie in the clubhouse. This article looks at how diverse MCC sailing community is by introducing some of its members. Greta Cusworth and Jay Gandy love the club’s cruising tradition. After spending five winters in the Caribbean and the Bahamas aboard their Beneteau 423, they bought “gandydancer”, a C&C 110, and joined MCC. Now they cruise for weeks at a time in Prince Edward County...

Exclusive Interview
Meet Our First Selected Olympians: Georgia and Antonia
Georgia and Antonia Lewin-Lafrance, National Team sailors in the 49erFX, are so far the only ones guaranteed a spot to compete for Canada. That will change this week when the final selections are made via the Princess Sofia Regatta. The Lewin-Lafrance sisters are going to the Princess Sofia in Palma, Majorca as well but for them it’s simply a tune up for the big Paris 2024 event in July. They are already selected; the stress is off, for a while. As designated Olympic competitors, we caught up for a brief chat before they left for this next event.

CAN SailGP: Podium in NZ Demolition Derby
“It was like demolition derby! I think we had been involved in three crashes by the time we reached the bottom mark,” said Phil at the end of race one. The ten teams were eager to line up last Sunday at the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Christchurch, after Saturday’s fleet races were cancelled due to marine mammal sightings on the racecourse. With over 30 km/hr of breeze, speeds were averaging in the 50-70km/hr range, with the 24M wings and large foil configuration for today’s three fleet races, followed by the final. It was all on in the pre-start of race one – first the US collided with Canada, followed by the Danish.

Tips: Boatspeed 2 Before the Race
The title of Dennis Conner’s popular book offers great advice for your mental and physical preparation. The basic idea is this: Before the start of every regatta or race you should eliminate any reason why you might not win that race. Paul Elvström, the Great Dane, offered similar advice when he said, “The good sailors all know how to race very well, but the champions have won the regatta before the racing begins.” In other words, he and Conner both agree that preparation (of boat, crew, mind, etc.) is absolutely key to racing success. Hold a team meeting. Getting your crew together before the race can be extremely valuable for preparation.

Sailing Shorts
April 3, 2024
Membership lets you race! Being a member of Sail Canada gives you the right to race! Based on the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), in order for a boat to be eligible to race, the ‘person in charge’ of the boat must be a member in good standing of their national sailing authority. Sail Canada’s prescriptions to the RRS outline that the designated person in charge, if resident in Canada, shall be a member of Sail Canada through either a Sail Canada club in good standing, or such person’s Provincial Sailing Association. Take a look at Canada’s member sailing clubs and make sure you’re eligible to race this year!
