Holy Smokin’ Flares it’s hot in Canada!
First, I am wondering how you are feeling about these extreme temperatures. I certainly love being able to jump in the lake during boating season and the hot temperatures are making that easier to do. On the other hand, the contributing factors to the extreme weather are concerning. I feel it is safe to note that we, as boaters, can help contribute positively to the environment and effects of climate change with one simple focus - plastics. Last June, I visited James Middleton at Ocean Legacy in Richmond, BC. He showed me the impact that the Ocean Legacy efforts are making on our oceans. Ocean Legacy is an amazing passion project, and it is a worthwhile visit to their website to learn more and gain inspiration. The biggest takeaway from my visit to their facility was the effect of plastics on climate change as well as our marine life. We can all do our part to avoid plastics use as much as possible and we can pull it out of our waterways when we see it. The impact may be small from a global perspective, but it is still positive. Help do what you can to keep plastics out of our waterways.
The other hot topic in the Canadian boating community is flare disposal. Andy Adams has done a great job investigating and summarizing the options that Canadian boaters have for flares and flare disposal. You can read that article here. If you are a retailer and you collect flares, please be sure to email aadams@kerrwil.com . We will add you to our list of retailers so that boaters can find you.
Enjoy your June boating and Reader’s Choice Monthly for June 2024 and get out on the water!

Paving the Way to Cleaner Boating – How a Commitment to Reducing our Environmental Impact is Inspiring Cleaner Boating in Ontario
|
By Dave Rozycki - Over the past seven decades, Ontario’s marina industry has developed alongside some of Canada’s largest freshwater lakes. Boaters have been able to enjoy the beautiful scenery and create lasting memories on the water, with certain marinas dating back to the 1960s. As we reflect on this rich history, we can begin to see trends in how our footprint may have had an effect on...

What To Look For If You Launch Late
|
The weather in early spring was not the best, so you may be just getting to launching. With all the rain in the eastern part of the country, a very pressing concern will be any water accumulation, and the associated potential structural damage. Any leaks in tarps, shrink-wrap or hatches may allow water to enter the boat and collect in the bilge. If you haven’t been allowed access to your boat to check on...

Battery Tests – Part 1
|
Modern Boats can be quite complex. In days-gone-by, a boat might have a single battery to start an engine, or to power some simple lighting. Boats produced over the last decade can have multiple batteries, connected in series and/or parallel, with 12, 24 and 48V systems, powering delicate and precision electronics. Despite the complexity of the systems, powering delicate devices: Batteries are...

Jeanneau Yachts 55
|
Throw away the box, this is some fresh thinking Seemingly part sailboat and part spaceship, the new Jeanneau Yachts 55 just busted through the boundaries of traditional yacht design. I couldn’t take my eyes off the bubble hardtop that met me at the dock and I stepped aboard with trepidation. A few hours later, I was planning how to spend my not-yet-won lottery winnings. With this new Philippe Briand design, Jeanneau is...

Rediscovering my boating backyard

By Steven Bull – Host, Water Ways TV - Undoubtedly the best part of my job is that I get to explore different waterways and communities all over North America and, as you may have seen in Season 2 of Water Ways, even the South of France and its historic Canal du Midi. While these adventures and explorations of new places are often bucket-list-worthy, what I have found particularly illuminating is exploring the waters close to...
