Join the Competition at Mimico Cruising Club
Sailors at Mimico Cruising Club (MCC) have long been passionate about racing. Located at the western end of Humber Bay, a short sail from downtown Toronto, this yacht club is home to 300 boats, about half of which are sailboats. And many of those belong to keen racers. Club races take place on Wednesday evenings starting in early May with the Spring Series and finishing in early October with the Frostbite Series. Boats compete in Flying Sail and small, medium, or large White Sail fleets. The season concludes with an awards night.

How to Plan a Sailing Charter
The yacht charter vacation product was pioneered in modern times by companies like The Moorings over 50 years ago, and for decades remained a best-kept secret of the boating industry. Back then, traditional sailboats comprised the majority of yachts available for many years, which required extensive sailing knowledge on the part of the customer in order to entertain the idea of enjoying a vacation like this. In recent years, larger more comfortable yachts have been developed which cater to a wider boating audience, as well as different products and a wider array of crewed yachts...

Most of the nominees for the European Yacht of the Year 2024 (EYOTY – the Awards will be presented at a gala celebrated as part of boot) will be on display, several World Premieres and perhaps some that will never arrive on our shores from custom and high-end builders. The Boat Nerd: Using Electronic Visual Distress Signals in Place of Pyrotechnic Distress Signals
As a pleasure boater with a vessel that is over 6m in length and operating over a mile from shore I am required to carry distress signalling devices. For years this has been satisfied by pyrotechnic flares. These flares are only certified for four years from date of manufacture and are difficult to dispose of, never mind that flare nights when we once could safely practice the use of these devices in a non-emergency situation have gone the way of the passenger pigeon. I was updating my current flare compliment spreadsheet to determine what flares I should purchase this year...

Review & Test – Sailing Smart Part 2: The Longer Tack
It’s still the winter; unless you are heading south, racing isn’t real for another few months. Studying continues. Last issue we looked at the starting line – now we will look more closely at the racecourse with questions 6 through 10. The SMARTS section of the test is critical – if you go fast in the wrong direction, or if you let other boats control where you go, you will find yourself near the middle or back of the fleet. That’s why this test is all about how to sail smarter. There are a total of 62 questions and answers about all aspects of strategy and tactics.

However, a few months later, Nathan Cowan passed away tragically in a car accident. Mac Morrin started sailing in the summer of 2004. After competing with the Queen’s University team and trying the 29er and 49er classes, he put his competitive sailing on hold after he was...
