Halifax and more Halifax!
Move over Vancouver! Suddenly Halifax has emerged as the nautical destination of choice for the glamour set. The NS media are full of photos of JK Rowling’s big yacht on the Halifax pier and Harry Potter fans are dropping by to pay homage.. Who knew this was the harbour where big money is tying up the old boat.
This is just weeks after Halifax Harbour hosted the Sail GP fleet to much acclaim. I am confident that the international SailGP fans couldn’t find Nova Scotia with a gold plated GPS but the Nova Scotia city certainly was the perfect venue for that big event too. Let’s look at the schedule of these big money SailGP events: Bermuda, Cadiz, St Tropez, Abu Dhabi, LA, NYC, San Fran….Halifax??? Yes indeed.

Distressing Situation Flares Up Again!
This all started innocently enough when a friend of mine purchased a (new to him) brokerage boat. The previous owner left a lot of equipment on board including a locker full of expired distress flares. My friend called to ask what to do. Well, flares are highly regulated; you can’t set them off, you can’t throw them in the garbage and you have to replace them with new flares that are within their expiry date or you risk substantial fines.

Battery Tests part 2 - What to do if your battery fails a test
If the battery fails in any of the three tests, corrective action should be taken: Clean terminals, top up battery fluid, charge the battery. When any corrective action is taken, run through the tests again and record the results. If the battery fails to charge, fails to hold a charge and/or fails the load test – more corrective action may be needed like reconditioning the battery.

Nighttime Boating Tips: Pre-planning and having the right equipment in good working order is the key to success and enjoyment.
Unfortunately we too often hear about boating accidents that occur at night. Many of these incidents take place after groups of boaters have gathered together to enjoy an evening lakeside concert or fireworks display. Often these events start during evening daylight hours and finish up well after dark. Boaters and their friends and families have arrived when it is easy to see what is going on around them and where they are...

Your Onboard Emergency Toolkit – “You had better take it with you…”
I’m superstitious – I admit it. But I have reasons to feel that way. When the lawn is burned out and the gardens are wilting, just wash the car. It’s sure to rain after that. The reverse is true. On a beautiful summer’s day, be always pack a raincoat and an umbrella just in case. It’s certain to stay sunny and clear. Operating on the same idea, Canadian Boating magazine has developed our Onboard Emergency Toolkit.
