The Nova Scotia sailing and boating community from across the province gathered Friday evening (November 17) at the Atlantica Hotel in Halifax to celebrate what was a great year for sailing and boating. Two hundred guests enjoyed a great meal, and bid on some fantastic auction items such as the first 4 tickets to the Rockwool Canadian Sail Grand Prix to be held in June, a fantastic Chester Race Week package, and much, much more. We were pleased to welcome Jareese Finch and Billy Gooderham from the CAN SailGP Team. Both recently moved to Halifax.

The Team Makes It Happen!
Chicago Yacht Club’s most famous event is the 289-nautical mile race from the Chicago Yacht Club at the bottom of Lake Michigan, to Mackinac Island, at the top – the longest freshwater sailing race in the world. Kevin Brown, and two of the notorious crew of a boat named “Notorious”, a Farr 30, sailed out of the Mimico Sailing Club, Toronto, were in Chicago November 4th, 2023, to hug their trophy, and pick up their first-place flag, for their division/section of the 114th Race to Mackinac. This race has been on the team’s bucket list and together they made it happen.

Eight Bells: George Cohon
While not officially a sailor (he owned a fabulous Hinckley Talaria 48 named McHappy III), George Cohon was a spectacular Canadian businessman and proud contributor of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. He generously provided his boat to assist with sailing events as well as helping with quiet support of many significant sailing campaigns. His central involvement was through the RCYC’s annual Paddlethon which raised significant funds for Ronald McDonald House, the charity he founded as CEO of McDonald’s Canada.

Guide to Keel Maintenance – Part 1
Keel maintenance is like any other maintenance on the boat; it is a matter of keeping an eye out for any tell-tale signs of water, or corrosion or wear. If you can stay ahead of it, it is extremely unlikely that major maintenance concerns will arise. The most common maintenance concerns for both lead and iron keels are the exterior surface condition and the keel bolts. Lead and iron keels have similarities and differences in these two matters. This guide will help you better understand the potential keel concerns and what it generally takes to fix them.

Taking the Appropriate Penalty
Just because you break a rule every now and then doesn’t mean you aren’t sportsmanlike. All sailors make mistakes, and sometimes these errors include rule infringements. This is not a problem as long as you take an appropriate penalty for each breach. But do you know which penalty is appropriate? Below are 12 race-course scenarios where you (the Red boat) break a rule. In each situation, which penalty, if any, should you take to comply with the rulebook and be a good sport?

Why Teach Your Child to Sail?
I could go on forever with the benefits of teaching children to sail at a young age. There is a fabulous program called Wet Feet, designed for children ages 5-8. Your child will learn terminology, balance, basic boat handling, knots, and so much more opening their lives to the joys of “messing around in boats” in a carefully supervised game-oriented environment. If your child spends any amount of time on the water, they will learn to love it, and we protect what we love. They could be making positive decisions toward keeping our waters healthy. In the Can Sail 1-4 Sail Canada programs you will see your child at the helm.
