Light Air Delivers Traffic and Penalties for Canada
SailGP’s fleet of ten national teams descended on Abu Dhabi for the 7th event of Season 4. Racing got underway Saturday with very light air conditions, which meant just four crew onboard and 29M (tall) wings. That almost zero foiling with big cats encountering heavy traffic all around the course. On day one it was the Canadians who overtook the most boats on the racecourse and were notably the best at getting out of tough situations. Finishing 3rd, 6th and 5th put the team in 4th overall, in striking distance of the event podium. Sunday in race four...

From the Expert
Comment from Fogh Boat Supplies on the Statement from Interlux Regarding the Discontinuation of VC17
After reading Interlux’s statement on the discontinued VC17 antifouling paint, we have prepared some of our recommendations: 1. Sand the VC17 off entirely with 80 grit sandpaper rather than 120 grit sandpaper. If you don’t remove almost all the VC17, whatever is applied over may not adhere to the hull and fall off. 2. After sanding with 80 grit sandpaper, apply one or two coats of Interprotect 2000. It will allow a good binder between the hull and the new paint to be applied. (Add 3-4 more coats for a total of 4-5 coats and you’ve waterproofed your hull.)

2024 Shark Schedule Announced
After a huge year in 2023, the CSCA Board is excited to announce a 10 regatta schedule for the 2024 season. A big thank you to all the host clubs for supporting the Canadian Shark Class allowing us to get the schedule launched so quickly. 2023 was a season of extremes with a no wind start and crazy winds to finish! Throughout the year, over 100 Sharks competed in the 2023 season. As a class, we continue to see new faces buying and restoring the Sharks that have been on the regatta circuit for many years. A true testament to the longevity of the Shark 24 sailboat.

With the holiday season behind us and the Toronto International Boat Show starting Friday, it’s time to plan our summer 2024 sailing season. As has become tradition, the event will kick off with registration and party at Mimico Cruising Club on Friday, August 16.

Review and Test – Sailing Smarts Part 3 – When Boats Converge
It’s still the winter; unless you are heading south, racing isn’t real for another few months. Studying continues. Last issue we looked the longer tack with questions 6 through 10. The SMARTS section of the test is critical – if you go fast in the wrong direction, or if you let other boats control where you go, you will find yourself near the middle or back of the fleet. That’s why this test is all about how to sail smarter. There are a total of 62 questions (we are just ¼ along) and answers about all aspects of strategy and tactics.
