Power of One – Edda Stockton
We all need fans no matter what path we choose in life. One fan can make a huge difference and when I needed a boost she was always there. We all are only one but we reach many. Edda Stockton was full of life, she called a spade a spade, had a mischievous grin and rarely said no to anything. She could dance up a storm on a moment’s notice and she was my biggest fan. The super-enthused C&C 34 one-design fleet brought us together. Edda owned “Tilley” a fast beauty of a 34 with simple red and white stripe graphics.

Keven Talks Sails
Battens – How to Keep Them in Your Sails
At the beginning of every season, I get large numbers of sailors calling and dropping by the loft to get replacement battens. Most of these batten losses are preventable if the sail is getting serviced regularly and the battens are installed correctly. Tip #1. Record the exact length and type of batten in the section of your logbook where you record the part numbers for impellers and oil filters and such. This will save many questions from the sailmaker when you drop by and assume the sailmaker knows exactly how long a 3rd batten is for a C&C 37 mainsail.

New Solo Speed Record For The R2AK
Eric Pesty became a fan-favourite in the 2023 Race to Alaska (R2AK), embarking on the incredible 750-nautical-mile race singlehanded, for the second time as Team Pestou. The R2AK is a two-stage event, with a 40-mile qualifying race from Port Townsend, Washington to Victoria B.C. before entrants can start the 710-nautical-mile grind from Victoria B.C. to Ketchikan, Alaska. Pesty set a new singlehanded elapsed time record and placed third overall in the 2023 R2AK. In 2022, Team Pestou’s race came to an abrupt end when his Corsair F-24 trimaran, GENEVA, among many others, suffered a race-ending log strike.

Speed & Smarts
Take Control of Your Mainsail – Part 1
On most boats, the mainsail is easily the biggest upwind sail and therefore has a proportionally large effect on the boat’s speed and pointing performance. Because the mainsail must cover an incredible variety of wind and wave conditions, it has to be stretched and twisted into a wide range of aerodynamic shapes. Fortunately, there are quite a few sail controls to help with this. Each of these has a large effect on the sail’s total power and performance. Depth of the sail – The depth (also called fullness or draft) of the mainsail is essentially a measure of the sail’s roundness.
